Zwickau

The composer Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau. The city on the Mulde River has an international reputation as the cradle of automobile manufacturing. For decades, the cult vehicle of the GDR era, the Trabant, was built here. Zwickau is the starting point of the Saxon Silver Road and achieved economic prosperity in the 19th century through coal mining. At the market you will find the town hall, the Gewandhaus and the birthplace of Robert Schumann. The construction of St. Mary's Cathedral dates back to the early 13th century. The high altar and the Holy Sepulchre are famous art treasures. In the Planitz district, a Baroque palace with an adjacent park can be visited.
