Abu Dhabi International Airport

Abu Dhabi Airport is a central international airport in the United Arab Emirates and serves as the main airport for the capital Abu Dhabi. It is located around 30 kilometers east of the city and is the second largest airport in the UAE after Dubai.

General information about Abu Dhabi Airport

Abu Dhabi International Airport is the only airport in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and operates under the 3-letter code AUH. The airport serves not only as an airport for tourists wishing to visit the emirate, but also for many business people and primarily as the hub and home airport of Etihad Airways. Only a small proportion of the approximately 25 million travelers who use Abu Dhabi Airport each year come from Germany, from where Etihad Airways departs from Frankfurt am Main and Munich. The airport is also served by flights from Düsseldorf and Berlin-Brandenburg airports.

As a year-round destination, with more pleasant temperatures in the winter months, there are no significant seasonal differences in flight connections. The flight time from Germany is around six and a half hours on a direct flight. However, as it is already 2 hours later in the United Arab Emirates, it is even eight and a half hours later on arrival than on departure.

Abu Dhabi Airport: location, transport connections and hotel transfers

Around 30 kilometers from downtown Abu Dhabi, the international airport stretches along the Khor Farida Lagoon with its numerous islands and mangrove swamps. Travelers need half an hour (38 km) to reach the luxury hotel Emirates Palace and 25 minutes (30 km) to Saadiyad Beach.

If you have to arrange your own transfer to the hotel, you have several options. There are cab ranks in front of Terminals 1 and 2. In addition, the city bus 901 runs every 40 minutes and around the clock between the airport and the city center of Abu Dhabi. It also travels to all three terminals one after the other. Alternatively, you can also book a private hotel transfer online in advance. It is also possible to book a rental car, although we strongly recommend comparing prices.

Abu Dhabi Airport: runways and terminals

Abu Dhabi Airport, which opened in 1982, has two runways, both of which are 4,100 meters long and one of which is 45 meters wide and the other 60 meters wide. Due to the steady growth in passenger numbers, a total of 4 terminals are now available for handling arrivals and departures. The newest terminal was inaugurated in 2017 and today mainly serves as a handling center for the domestic airline Etihad Airways. There is a free shuttle bus service between the terminals.
