Hamburg Airport, also known as Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt, is the oldest and fifth largest airport in Germany and is located approx. 9 km north of Hamburg city center. It was opened in 1911 as an airship port, served military purposes during the Second World War and was subsequently restored for civilian air traffic by the British occupying forces. The airport played an important role in the Berlin Airlift and was initially Lufthansa's home airport.
