Christmas market in Stockholm

The Christmas markets in Gamla Stan, Skansen and Drottningholm Castle

Those who come to Stockholm during the Advent season can look forward to a very special attraction of the Swedish capital: the Christmas market (Swedish: julmarknad). What many people do not know: beside the famous Christmas market in the old town, there are also numerous other Christmas markets in Stockholm for pre-Christmas shopping. We present the most famous ones on this page.

Stortorgets Julmarknad

If you travel to Stockholm in the run-up to Christmas, you can't miss it: the Christmas market in the centre of Stockholm's old town, Gamla Stan. The market on the Stortorget exists - with an interruption from 1907 to 1914 - already since 1837, therewith, it is the oldest Christmas market in the whole Sweden. In 41 red stalls you can buy things similar to a German Christmas market, only typically Swedish: Glögg and Pepparkakor, Swedish handicrafts, delicatessen etc.

Christmas market in Skansen

The Christmas market in Skansen is just as traditional: it has been taking place without interruption since 1903. Here, too, you can buy traditional Swedish handicrafts, and of course various foods and delicacies.

  • Open on the 4 weekends in Advent 2019 (Saturday and Sunday), from 11am to 4pm each day.

Drottningholm Castle

The Christmas market at Drottningholm is a royal affair - after all, this is where the Swedish king lives with his family. On the second weekend of Advent 2019, numerous craftsmen have set up their stalls at the market in front of the castle, where you can buy traditional handicrafts. Of course, the stalls with hot and cold treats are not missing.

  • On Saturday 7 December 2019 the market is open from 10am - 6pm, on Sunday 9 December from 10am - 5pm.
