Åland is a region of Finland, but enjoys extensive political autonomy. The territory of Åland is a group of islands in the Baltic Sea at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia. Since 1921 and a vote of the League of Nations, the total of 6,700 islands and archipelagos have been demilitarized. The well-being of the inhabitants rests on two pillars: shipping and tourism. Among the most important sights in Åland are Kastelholm Castle in the municipality of Sund and the Bomarsund Fortress. Vacationers look forward to hiking and water sports in Åland.
