Cape Verde is an island nation in the central Atlantic Ocean, consisting of ten volcanic islands. The Cape Verde Islands are located between 600 and 850 kilometers west of Africa and are known for their Portuguese-African Creole culture, traditional Morna music and their numerous beaches. Cape Verde was discovered and colonized by Portuguese sailors in the 15th century and served as an important trading post during the slave trade across the Atlantic. Cape Verde has been independent since 1975 and has developed into a stable and prosperous country. The islands are increasingly popular with package travelers and offer a diverse range of beaches, scenery and lively cities such as Praia and Mindelo. The best known islands are Santiago, São Vicente, Santo Antão, Fogo and Sal. The official language is Portuguese, but most residents speak Cape Verdean Creole. Sights worth seeing include the Forte Real de São Felipe fortress in the former capital Cidade Velha, the Migration Museum and market in Assomada, and the Cova Crater on Fogo.
