Croatia is located in southeastern Europe and borders Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and the Adriatic Sea. The history of Croatia dates back to the 7th century, when the Croats settled the area. After various political changes over the centuries, Croatia gained its independence in 1991 and has been a member of the European Union since 2013. Croatia is known for its beautiful beaches and islands on the Adriatic Sea, the historic old town of Dubrovnik, the Plitvice Lakes National Park and the coastal city of Split with Diocletian's Palace. Croatian cuisine is rich and varied with influences from Mediterranean, Slavic and Hungarian cuisine.
