Latvia is a Baltic state in Northern Europe. It borders Estonia, Russia, Belarus and Lithuania and has a coast on the Baltic Sea. The territory of Latvia was inhabited by Baltic tribes in ancient times, later it was conquered by the knights of the Teutonic Order and by Sweden. In the 20th century Latvia was part of the Soviet Union before regaining its independence in 1991. The capital, Riga, is known for its Art Nouveau architecture, and the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other famous sights include Rundale Castle, Gauja National Park and Jurmala Beach. Latvia is also known for its folklore, crafts, music and cuisine, including traditional dishes such as potato pancakes, pickled vegetables and sweet brown bread.
