São Tomé and Príncipe is an African island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, west of Gabon. The two islands of São Tomé and Príncipe are part of a volcanic mountain range and offer remarkable landscapes with rainforests, beaches and rock formations. The Ôbo Nature Park and Pico Cão Grande are popular excursion destinations. São Tomé is the largest island and the capital of the country. The population lives mainly from agriculture, especially cocoa cultivation. The country's history is marked by colonization by Portugal and slavery. Since independence in 1975, São Tomé and Príncipe has been a stable democracy.
