About 20 kilometers north of the island of Zakynthos, the largest Ionian island of Kefalonia is located immediately southwest of the Greek mainland, slightly offshore from the entrance to the Gulf of Patras. Typical for this island are its sandy bays in an otherwise rather dry, rough landscape.
Its capital Argostoli is located on a hill in the west. Most of the coast is dominated by limestone cliffs, but there are still many beautiful bays with small stretches of white sandy beach. Very popular is the one at Myrtos in the north of the island. Often the beaches can only be reached on foot, after negotiating narrow serpentine roads.
Today, about 40,000 people live on "Kefalliniá", most of them probably in Argostoli in the southwest and in Lixouri opposite the approximately eleven kilometer long bay. The mountain Enos is with 1.628 meters the highest elevation. From June to September, the island is often visited by British tourists.
