Mainz is the capital of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The media city and carnival stronghold is known for its well-preserved old town center with its half-timbered houses and medieval marketplaces. In the middle of the city, the Renaissance-style market fountain with red pillars is an attraction for visitors. Not far from it you can visit the cathedral, a Romanesque building with deep red sandstone and a striking octagonal tower. Together with the old towns of Speyer and Worms, Mainz's city center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2021. Mainz was founded in Roman times and was the workplace of Johannes Gutenberg, who invented letterpress printing and to whom a university and museum are dedicated. The Mainz Gutenberg Museum displays two original copies of the Gutenberg Bible.
