Located a good 100 kilometers south of Mykonos, this Cycladic island in the southern Aegean Sea has about 16,000 inhabitants and a very special unique selling point. Santorini's interrupted crescent-shaped land surface is the caldera of a collapsed supervolcano. Two particularly violent eruptions took place, one 200,000 years ago, the other about 180,000 years ago. According to the latest findings, these eruptions were triggered by a drop in sea level of about 40 meters. As a result, the pressure of the water column became too small to keep the magma chamber in check. Santorini captivates with its rugged landscape and the so classic blue and white architecture.
