Spetses - the name comes from the Venetian "Isola di Spezzie" as "island of fragrances". The island was already famous in ancient times for its blooming flora. There it was still called Pytiousa because of its dense pine forests. Shipping and shipbuilding have left their mark on the island. The legendary Laskarina Bouboulina equipped ships here against the Ottomans and even had three of her own built. A museum on the island acquaints visitors with her life. Cars are prohibited on Spetses. You can conquer the island on foot, by bike or quite romantically in a carriage. This fits perfectly with the ambience of the beautiful villas from the 19th century.
