Termessos

The ruins of the ancient city of Termessos

The ancient city of Termessos is located about 30 km northwest of Antalya in the Taurus Mountains and was already mentioned in the writings of Homer. The huge complex at an altitude of 1000 m is not restored but exceptionally well preserved. Few tourists stray here and so visitors can enjoy Termessos and the beautiful green surroundings in peace.

The archaeological site of Termessos

Termessos is located on a plateau of the mountain Güllük Daği, which was known in ancient times by the Greek name Solymos. The city's heyday was in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. It was considered impregnable at that time and was protected by a strong defensive system and solid city walls. Only a huge earthquake that occurred in 567 in this region of Turkey caused great damage.

Visiting the ruined city

Those who are interested in history and decide to visit Termessos will certainly not regret it, because there are a lot of buildings to discover on the extensive area. However, the climb is quite steep and the paths are quite uneven, so visitors should be good on their feet. Since there is no kiosk or shop here, it is definitely recommended to take some water with you. But those who make the effort will have the pleasure of experiencing one of the few sites left in its original state.

Among the highlights of Termessos are the well-preserved amphitheatre, an odeion and several temples. One of them is dedicated to Emperor Hadrian and another to the Greek goddess Artemis. The cistern, the ancient baths and the sports ground, i.e. the so-called Gymnasium, are also worth a closer look. Particularly noteworthy is the extensive necropolis with its many sarcophagi, among which stands out a large tomb adorned by an elaborate lion relief.

Since Termessos lacks the crowds of other excavation sites, visitors can enjoy the wonderfully situated complex and the beautiful view that is offered from this height in peace and quiet.
