Viktualienmarkt

Famous market for food in the old town of Munich

Munich's Viktualienmarkt is located in the old town. In keeping with its name, food is sold there - and has been every weekday since 1807.

The Munich Viktualienmarkt

The entire area is two hectares, the stalls are fixed and usually have quite large displays, depending on the season there are also flying stalls. There are several sections (I - VII) around a beer garden that focus on different foods. The Munich Maypole rises unmistakably above the market, which also has several fountains. A smaller Viktualienmarkt is located in the Pasing district of Munich.

In the course of its history, the Munich Viktualienmarkt has developed a lot. It received a bank butcher hall, a tripe sales hall, bread shops, fruit sales pavilions, shop buildings and a North Sea fishing hall. The memorial fountains on the market are dedicated to Karl Valentin, Liesl Karlstadt, Weiß Ferdl, Ida Schumacher, the Roider Jackl and Elise Aulinger, among others. The 140 companies selling at the market today offer bread, fruit, flowers, meat, fish, dairy products, juices and also handicrafts. Munich residents go shopping here regularly, and for tourists the market is an attraction.

Interesting stalls

Visitors like to have a coffee in the coffee roastery of the Viktualienmarkt. It is immensely popular, with 100 cups passing over the counter every hour. The Räucherkistl offers Austrian specialties, including smoked meats, spirits and farmhouse breads. The Munich Soup Kitchen cooks and bakes Bavarian classics (liver dumplings, pancakes) and also offers modern vegan versions (ginger-carrot-coconut recipes).

Of course, the Viktualienmarkt is also home to the good Bavarian pretzel, and Karnoll's right by the Frauenkirche aims to sell the best of their kind in all of Munich, if not Bavaria. Bäckerliesl, on the other hand, sells doughy farmer's crust bread, the stall has been around since 1950. Caspar Plautz is a stall for the potato of the week, which can be prepared with, for example, oven pumpkin, harissa, orange peel, spinach and lemon yoghurt. For the big appetite there is a hearty lunch at the Pschorr between the Viktualienmarkt and the Schrannenhalle, such as pork knuckle and roast, beef tartare or - for vegetarians - incredibly delicious spinach dumplings.
