Stockholm Castle is located on the island of Stadsholmen in the old centre of Stockolm, in the district of Gamla Stan. It was built between 1690 and 1750 according to plans by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and is one of the most remarkable baroque buildings in Scandinavia.

Stockholms slott

The castle is no longer occupied by the royal family (they live in Drottningholm Castle outside Stockholm). However, it still houses offices of the Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf and other members of the royal family.

The castle stands on foundations of the old castle "Tre Kronor", which was extended by Gustav Wasa in the 16th century. The rebuilding to a representative castle was still decided by the Swedish king Charles XI, but the castle burned down almost completely in 1697 after the first works on the northern facade. In the same year, Charles XI also died. In the following decades, the castle was then built in the style of the Italian baroque in its present form.

The changing of the guard

A special tourist attraction is the changing of the palace guard, during which the new guard troops, accompanied by music corps, parade in historical uniforms.
